This week, there was a sudden increase in LinkedIn communications, as I started receiving congratulations from many sources about the 3-year work anniversary of ICHIBAN Consult. Indeed, it appears that time still flies and it was nice to receive so many reactions.
Many may be puzzled whether the move was worth the effort. Leaving the ‘safe’ large consulting houses and going for a small structure has proven to offer many benefits. Suddenly, many old issues and time consuming activities, which were frustrating to say the least, have disappeared, such as reporting administration (extensive time sheets and endless internal reports), much easier client acceptation and engagement procedures and not the least, an immense time saving in internal meetings.
Also the time, spent on our congested roads has drastically been reduced as now I can mostly work at home or close by.
Where does the freed-up time go to? Mostly to client service and professional development efforts to innovation and investments and not in the least, to a real work-life balance and flexible working scheme. My technical knowledge and skills could vastly be increased and it has in general proven to be very pleasant to be in full control of my work environment and be able to decide on investments to be made, the partners to work with and where and when to direct my efforts. Contacts with clients and with peers have moved up to a different and overall more satisfying level.
Time has proven that in Belgium, there is room for small, independent providers, who work at high quality standards. A firm place could be carved out amid the big players.
Recently, I also could celebrate another birthday and another benefit of ICHIBAN came up. Being in control of my own career will become more valuable each year. The large consulting houses still mainly invest in the new and young recruits and spend little time and effort on the individuals, working at the other end of the career spectrum. In my new work environment I will be able to make my own decisions and ensure work and job satisfaction during many years to come.
Overall it has been an enriching and exciting period in my career. Many thanks to my clients and supporters for their confidence and support and look forward to working with you the coming years.
