Somewhere within the Belgian tax authorities, there is someone who likes to complicate matters as much as possible. This to make sure that we all get confused.
Challenge: try to find the deadline for filing your personal income tax return for income year 2020: the deadlines are actually different, depending on whether you are a resident taxpayer versus a non-resident taxpayer.
To make matters worse, there are 3 different ways for filing tax returns, each time with different deadlines:
- on paper
- electronic – Tax-on-Web
- a so-called ‘simplified tax form’ – paper or Tax-on-Web (issued and prepared by the authorities)
Some genius thus decided to define 6 different deadlines that are possible. Missing the deadline exposes you to penalties and even possibly additional taxes.
